# Introduction

> What Ask is, and where to start when you connect it to your own systems.

Ask runs AI agents that answer your customers in chat, email and phone calls. You configure an agent in the dashboard: what it knows, how it speaks, and which tools it may use to look things up or act for the customer.

These docs are for the people who set up and run Ask: admins who configure agents and channels, and developers who connect Ask to their own systems.

## How a tool call works

1. A customer asks something the agent cannot answer from its knowledge, such as "Where is order 10432?"
2. The agent picks one of the tools you enabled for it and fills in the tool's inputs.
3. Ask calls the tool. For a webhook tool, that is an HTTPS `POST` to your endpoint.
4. The agent reads your response as data, never as instructions, and answers the customer.
